Bishop Welcomes Lotterywest Contribution
On Monday 22 September 2014, Geraldton MLA, Mr Ian Blayney was joined by Lotterywest Commissioner Mr Stephen Carre to present $651,038 to Bishop Justin Bianchini towards the fit-out of the Monsignor John Hawes Heritage Centre and the associated outdoor plaza.
Joining Bishop Bianchini were members of the Cathedral Precinct Project Committee, Mrs Barbara Thomas, Mr Laurie Graham, Mr Rob Houwen, Mrs Gerry Eastman and Fr Robert Cross.
This generous grant from Lotterywest is a major boost to the fundraising efforts of the Cathedral Precinct Project Committee and recognises the exceptional significance of the mobile heritage of Monsignor Hawes which will be displayed in museum standard conditions at the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre.
As well as a museum, the Heritage Centre complex will contain a café and plaza area where visitors and the local community can imbibe a coffee in the ambience of its gardens and the adjacent St Francis Xavier Cathedral.
It is hoped work on the Heritage Centre will commence after Easter 2015 together with a major restoration and conservation works programme on St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.
